About Us
NORTHERN MOUNTAIN MOVERS ORIGIN STORY.
Northern Mountain Movers is a locally owned, family business that has been serving B.C.’s interior for over 55 years now. We have been expanding and evolving with the market trends since the beginning. It all started back in the 1969, the hey days of Prince George when it was truly the wild wild west.
Uncle Tom MacDonald, and Andre Lipowski were selling Mobile homes down on 1st. Ave. Unfortunately the company they were working for was about to go under, and it didn’t look like they were going to get paid wages owed. Uncle Tom being the good Scotsman that he was, determined that was unacceptable. So the two of them made a deal with the owners. Tom and Andre became in possession of a bunch of used furniture that was warehoused in the back shop in lieu of wages. Now the only thing left to do was liquidate it, and recoup the the money owed to them.
Uncle Tom, never being one to let obstacles get in his way, and an abstract thinker, decided that Andre and him would open a used furniture store, and run it for 60 to 90 days. That way they could sell off the furniture, recoup their losses, and move on to the next big adventure in their lives. City Secondhand was born!
In 1970 Tom’s brother Doug MacDonald was recovering from a back injury that was the result of being a tree faller on the west coast of Vancouver Island. Since he was sidelined, he decided to move up to Prince George and help his brother sell furniture. In 1980,Tom and Mary MacDonald moved back to Vancouver Island, while Doug and his new bride Betty became the new owners of City Secondhand. Since they had always had a truck for moving, buying and selling furniture, their friends and family were always getting them to help them with moving. It became so frequent, that they decided they would have to start charging for deliveries and moving services. Soon it became a large part of our business.
In 1998 Doug and Betty’s son Neal MacDonald became a partner in the family business. Neal managed the moving trucks, while Doug and Betty ran the store.
In 2022 Neal’s son Logan MacDonald joined the team, and he’s been a welcomed addition. In 2023 we saw some big changes. Due to the current market conditions in downtown Prince George, we decided to close the secondhand store, and focus on the moving aspect of our business. This left us in a bit of a quagmire. We have evolved from a Secondhand store into a moving company. The name City Secondhand didn’t seem appropriate. So we decided to change the company name to:
NORTHERN MOUNTAIN MOVERS.
Here we are in 2024, the little secondhand store that was only supposed to operate for 60 to 90 days back in 1969, has been in business for over 50 years! Three generations later, instead of a secondhand store, we’re a moving company. The MacDonald family is still offering the same great service, and friendly smiles that we are known for. We look forward to helping you with all your local and long distance moving needs. We also do deliveries, and are adding a hotshot service this year. Congratulations, if you made it through all that.
Neal MacDonald, Owner & Operator.
